“Pro-Choice Christian” Is An Oxymoron

Oxymoron Definition

A figure of speech in which opposite or contradictory ideas or terms are combined (Ex.: thunderous silence, sweet sorrow) A figure of speech in which two words with opposing meanings are used together intentionally for effect. First attested in the 17th century, noun use of 5th century Latin oxymōrum ( adj), neut.

Pro-Life Action Ministries is “an interdenominational Christian organization dedicated to publicly defending the sanctity of human life and saving lives from abortion, infanticide, and euthanasia through peaceful direct-action and educational projects”. In my role as a prayer partner, I don’t verbally address abortion-aimed women directly, but I can visualize Michele Herzog’s response as she pleads for reluctant mothers to come out and reason together before murdering her child without moral hesitation. Michele has served as a sidewalk counselor for many years. She recently shared with me that self-proclaimed Christian women entering the abortion clinics where she’s ministered are much more hardhearted than non-believers. In the words of one, “I go to church every Sunday and Wednesday night; Jesus will forgive me.”

In fact, as she begged for this child’s life, the mother angrily responded, “Don’t judge me!” To which Michele explained that she is not judging her. In actuality, she is judging her own child as unworthy of life and condemning her/him to death by violent execution.

As a Christian, I believe that each of us has a personal responsibility to share the truth of the Gospel and to act on the mandate presented in the Fanny Crosby hymn, “Rescue the Perishing”, and I believe that on a sidewalk in front of an abortion clinic is the perfect place to enact this plea:

  1. Rescue the perishing, care for the dying,
    Snatch them in pity from sin and the grave;
    Weep o’er the erring one, lift up the fallen,
    Tell them of Jesus, the mighty to save.
    • Refrain:
      Rescue the perishing, care for the dying,
      Jesus is merciful, Jesus will save.
  2. Though they are slighting Him, still He is waiting,
    Waiting the penitent child to receive;
    Plead with them earnestly, plead with them gently;
    He will forgive if they only believe.
  3. Down in the human heart, crushed by the tempter,
    Feelings lie buried that grace can restore;
    Touched by a loving heart, wakened by kindness,
    Chords that were broken will vibrate once more.
  4. Rescue the perishing, duty demands it;
    Strength for thy labor the Lord will provide;
    Back to the narrow way patiently win them;
    Tell the poor wand’rer a Savior has died.

Where have we gone wrong, church? How can someone boldly declare a personal relationship with Jesus Christ while entering an abortion clinic to murder a child created by God? What is wrong with this picture? Let’s consider this tragic reality in view of scripture, science, and, of course, common sense. I wanted to respond to Democratic candidate, Peter Buttigieg, a self-proclaimed Catholic who supports abortion through birth and including infanticide. Since he has just resigned from the presidential race, this post in LifeNews is excellent. I also want to share my personal thoughts with you:

In a recent interview with co-host Willie Geist, on Morning Joe, the question was posed:

Mayor Pete your candidacy has now peaked the interests of religious conservatives…They like you. But they get to the point where they look down your resumé and they say life is precious. They talk about the sanctity of life and they can’t get past your support of late-term abortion. What do you say to them?

Buttigieg, however, is either misleading or has been misled in his rote response according to Kristine Marsh, Staff Writer for MRC Culture at the Media Research Center:

The premise of the question is very misleading. We’re talking about situations where the life and health of the mother is at risk and/or the child can’t survive. Look, you only get to that stage, that late moment, if you had been planning to bring a pregnancy to term,” he claimed.

Marsh explains:

Buttigieg’s claims here simply not true. The term “late-term” is imprecise but most understand it to occur in the third trimester or even as late as the 37th week of pregnancy, when a baby is full term. Medical advances have made it so that babies have a high chance of surviving if forced to deliver in the third trimester due to serious complications. What Buttigieg is also suggesting is irrelevant because state laws that limit Roe v. Wade have exceptions in cases where the mother’s life is at risk. Beyond that, according to the pro-abortion Guttmacher Institute, most women who had late-term abortions didn’t do so over health concerns, but because the baby was an unwanted interference in their life.

I’m not the first person to respond to these false claims in defense of the church. Pete Buttigieg’s Brother-in-Law Tells Him to “Read the Bible” After He Says It Supports Abortion.

I’m a pastor, I share the Gospel — politics is secondary to me,” Glezman said. “I’m about sharing the good news of Christ, and I hope all people watching this… as these Democrat debates come up here in a couple of days … that people would stop and actually think. We’re not talking about just a little blob of cells, we’re talking about human life.”

When I began this post, I said that we would look at three pertinent areas in considering the claim that abortion through birth (including infanticide) is a woman’s choice and that it is consistent with Christian profession:

Scripture: Chuck Swindoll from Insight for Living shares this in his Listener Favorite: “Walk Humbly with Your God”, “Strengthening Your Grip on Purity”:

After ministering for only a few weeks among the Thessalonians, Paul had been able to impart to them the life-changing truth of the gospel. But Paul didn’t just want to increase his list of converts; he wanted to teach them to “walk in a manner worthy of the God who [had called them] into His own kingdom and glory” (1 Thessalonians 2:12). Paul wanted the Thessalonians to excel in godliness, which would result in closer fellowship with God and more satisfying lives.

When casual sex/sex outside of marriage are clearly seen as sin, we would immediately decrease the number of unplanned pregnancies and resulting abortions. Abortion would cease to be just another form of birth control. In the Amplified version, Hebrews 4:15 states, “For we do not have a High Priest who is unable to sympathize and understand our weaknesses and temptations, but One who has been tempted [knowing exactly how it feels to be human] in every respect as we are, yet without [committing any] sin.”

To move from scripture to science, I’ll share two videos: one a wonderful creation of life in the womb (9 months in 4 minutes) and then an ad that you may not have seen from Faces of Choice of actual abortion survivors.

The House’s cruel response to their appeal is, “Yes, we can!” Nancy Pelosi and Democrats Defeat Bill to Stop Infanticide, Care for Babies Born Alive After Abortions. Tragically, a breathing, crying infant is not enough to stop infanticide via medical neglect.

I said that the last explanation offered would be based on common sense. Sadly, we may be seeing the demise of common sense in America when every Democratic candidate for President is making abortion and infanticide of American children their clarion call. I pray that we will see a return to common sense in our upcoming election. I pray for the abolition of abortion as we realize that even during a crisis pregnancy, “In God we trust” is our national and should be enacted individually.

It is our duty to help women by encouraging purity including abstinence until marriage AND being available to help a mother who is unprepared or unwilling to parent her child should an unplanned pregnancy occur. We can lovingly teach them the truth about who God is and how valuable every life (including their own) is. When we trust in God, He will help us and enable us to help others.

Let’s stop using the term “Pro-Choice Christian” because it is politically correct. We’re not only breaking God’s commands, we are breaking His heart!

Please join me in praying for America during 40 Days for Life in your community. May 2020 be the year that we experience revival and return to scripture, science, and common sense. If you would like to know Jesus Christ personally, please learn more about the Gospel in The Four Spiritual Laws.
