Baby Maverick was Partially Born, then Operated On
In 2020, at 27 weeks pregnant, Adrianna and Micah Mashburn were told their pre-born son (Maverick) had a rare lung defect called Congenital Pulmonary Airway Malformation (CPAM). CPAM is a large, cystic tumor pressing on the esophagus and heart. Doctors gave baby Maverick only a 10% chance to live. Adrianna and Micah were referred to Dr. Darrell Cass at the Cleveland Clinic, where the couple agreed to undergo a procedure that would allow surgeons to partially deliver Maverick via C-section while keeping him attached to the placenta for oxygen and nourishment during surgery. At 36 weeks, doctors delivered Maverick’s head and chest, opened his tiny chest cavity, and removed the grapefruit-sized tumor before completing his birth. After six weeks in the NICU, Maverick went home healthy and free of complications.
These stories are remarkable! All of these children faced a diagnosis that could have ended their lives. Not only from the illness itself, but also through abortion. Sadly, even with the advances we’ve made in modern medicine, many babies with life-threatening conditions are not offered the same level of care and careful attention as the babies we discussed today. The only difference between them is that these babies were wanted, and others were discarded due to conditions beyond their control. Parents of pre-born children with serious prenatal medical conditions are often pressured into getting an abortion. In fact, according to a study published in the National Library of Medicine, 63% of babies diagnosed with prenatal spina bifida are aborted.
It is sad that our society has believed the lie that a life with severe medical conditions is not one worth living. This narrative is perpetuated by the abortion industry as they continue to push the mass murder of children with disabilities. Jenny Foster was told that abortion was her only option after her baby was diagnosed with fetal abnormalities. She was pressured by medical advice that framed ending her child’s life as the compassionate or practical choice. She later came to deeply regret that decision. Jenny was met with profound grief and sorrow in the years that followed. Her story reveals a sobering truth: abortion is not a consequence-free “solution.” This is because the choice to abort takes a human life! According to scripture, each person is fearfully and wonderfully made by their Creator, regardless of their medical condition at or before birth. Psalm 139:13-14 says, “For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well.”
The Lord does not make mistakes! Each person is created in God’s image and has a purpose. The Lord loved each and every human being so much that he left his heavenly home to become a helpless baby to save us. 2 Corinthians 5:21 says, “For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.” This is why we continue to minister to women outside of abortion facilities, including some who are aborting due to an adverse prenatal diagnosis. We are there to speak to them in love and truth, encouraging them to keep their baby. According to Focus on the Family, over 56% of women considering abortion who receive counseling and an ultrasound choose life for their child. This is why connecting parents with resources is so important. Partner with us today as we provide these lifesaving resources to abortion bound parents in Minnesota and central Florida!
