Nineteen-year-old Monyay Paskalides of Florida was placed into a group home in the foster care system at age 11. On Tuesday, she finally celebrated her adoption. Leah Paskalides worked with Monyay over the years as her caseworker and mentor with the Safe Children Coalition.

Foster care tends to be extremely misunderstood, with people often viewing foster children as “broken” or “damaged,” although this is far from true. The goal of foster care is reunification with biological parents whenever possible, but sometimes that isn’t an option.
