Surgery on Baby Rylan Removes Life-Threatening Tumor on Heart
In May 2021, doctors at Cleveland Clinic performed a rare open fetal surgery on a 26-week pre-born baby named Rylan. The amazing procedure involved carefully lifting the baby’s arms and shoulders from the womb while the head remained inside, giving surgeons access to the heart. They successfully removed a tumor (an intrapericardial teratoma) that was causing fluid buildup and threatening heart failure. This was only the second known case worldwide in which such a surgery allowed the pregnancy to continue and the baby to be delivered healthy.
